Last night, a friend of mine had an extremely bad anxiety attack. She was so stressed she couldn’t breathe, had hives, and had swelling and it got so bad she had to go to the emergency room. When I talked to her today I asked her how she felt and she said, “stuff like this doesn’t happen to me. I’m supposed to be the strong one for my friends and my mom. This isn’t me! I’ve dealt with stress before and I don’t understand why this happened to me today.”
I said this to her, but I feel like some of y’all need to hear this too: You have to take care of yourself emotionally, and mentally or you will wear yourself out.
We are always taught to exercise and eat right but we are seldom told to give our minds a rest and give our hearts a rest. Unfortunately, we can’t be superwomen all the time. Our bodies cannot handle constant stress, constant anxiety, and constant exhaustion. You MUST take time to revive you soul and your mind or you will have physical reactions to your mental neglect.
How do we take a break? It’s different for every person. For me, I turn my phone off and sit and watch my favorite TV show/Movie and eat bad food for a couple of hours. I put away the homework and turn off my distractions and just take sometime to breathe and be by myself. ( If you want to learn of others ways to reduce stress click here)
Another thing I do, which some of you may not agree with, is counseling. I go to counseling every week for an hour and just talk to someone about life. If you are a college student, guess what? You school probably offers free to little cost counseling and I strongly recommend taking advantage of it. Even if you only go once a month or every week, it’s always a good idea to talk to someone and get things off your chest.
God never intended humans to feel the pains of stress or anxiety, but because of The Fall we do. Fortunately, our God is awesome and has given us words of encouragement that are meant to bring us peace. Click here for a great link to some encouraging Bible verses when you are feeling anxious or stressed. One that always calms me down and gives me hope is Isaiah 43:2; It says:
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
God tells us in His word come hell or high water He will be with us and He will protect us. The devil will try his best but he will always fail when it comes to our Lord.
I pray that you go in peace and that you never forget that God is the Rock that you can lean on.
